What is IELTS? Types of Test, Duration & Modules

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world’s most recognized English language proficiency test for Overseas Education and Immigration. The proficiency test is accepted by more than 10,000 organizations globally including universities abroad, colleges, vocational institutions, employers, and government agencies to evaluate the user in four modules of the English language: Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening.

There are two IELTS tests available –

  • IELTS Academic – if you are applying for higher education in English-speaking countries.
  • IELTS General Training – if you are migrating to Australia, Canada, or the UK for Job or Immigration.

The total duration for the IELTS test is 2 hrs and 45 minutes and would be a computer-based exam as well as pen and paper-based.

Eligibility for Taking IELTS Proficiency Test

IELTS Band Score and How are they calculated?

IELTS scores are calculated between 0 to 9 Bands on a calibration of 0.5, for e.g. 6.5 or 7.0 bands. You’ll get bands for individual sections i.e. Listening, Writing, Reading, and Speaking. The overall band will be the average of all modules.

  • If your overall score is an average of 7.25, your score will be increased to 7.5. As mentioned in the above example.
  • If your overall score is an average of 6.75, your score will be increased to 7.

  • Your score is rounded up or down to the nearest 0.5 or whole score as shown above.

IELTS Scoring

There is no negative marking in IELTS, so attempt the full question paper and don’t leave any blanks. In Reading and Listening exam there are 40 questions each. Below mentioned is the marking for both Academic and General IELTS.

IELTS Writing Scoring

The IELTS Exam has four papers: Speaking, Listening, Reading & Writing. There are 2 types of IELTS tests; Academic & General Training. Speaking & Listening papers are the same in both types of tests but Reading & Writing test papers are different.

The IELTS EXAM (PBT) is conducted 4 times a month and the Computer-Delivered IELTS is conducted more times. To apply, you can log on to the IDP website and apply for the test online. There is no limit to the number of IELTS tests that one can take.

There is no passing score for IELTS. Though your score decides which country you are moving to for study and the visa category you are applying for.

The validity of your IELTS Exam Is for 2 years.
